Tim Brown TED TALK

We are afraid of being judged by the people around us while sharing our ideas. Creative companies should foster a good environment to take risk and to play as it breeds creativity. The environments should simulate a playground as it would encourage play. Playfulness can help us work better as it makes us feel better while we do our work. It can allow us to think of new role an object can take on rather than its commonly perceived uses. Play shocks people out of their normal way of thinking to look at things from a different perspective. Adult behaviours restrict creativity as such behaviours suppress experimentation and games. Stopping at the first solution would not allow us to achieve other more interesting results. Playful building allows something to be quickly made into a tangible object allowing more room for visualising possible improvements, rather than just discussing with words. Role playing lets us act out the experience while we better design a service. It allows us to be in another person’s shoes, empathising with the experiences. We need to play by the rules and there must be a transition between play and work. Divergence require more play while convergence require more serious work.
